AWP's Commitment to Safety

Area Wide Protective was founded with a vision to provide the best safety services in the industry, and protect our clients, our team, and the general public with safe, compliant, professional traffic control. As a company, and as a team, AWP is dedicated to safety in everything we do.

As part of the company's commitment to safety, AWP protects clients with eleven million dollars in liability coverage on every project. AWP also provides safety training and equipment that meets or exceeds all requirements and regulations set by government and industry authorities. Every member of the AWP field team is American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) certified and is required to pass courses in First Aid & CPR, state-specific DOT training, and National Safety Council (NSC) Defensive Driving as part of the on-boarding process.

AWP maintains and fosters a safety culture company-wide. AWP's Divisional Directors visit facilities weekly to conduct facility safety and work zone audits. Mandatory employee safety meetings, led by supervisors, are held monthly in every area to discuss safety practices as a local unit. Additionally, every AWP facility has a group of employees who volunteer as a Safety Committee to hold monthly safety meetings, and take an active role in improving the safety of their team. These committees also hold quarterly conference calls with the President & CEO, VP of Safety, and the Director of Compliance & Training to report and address safety concerns and initiatives. Every AWP work crew is inspected by a Safety Supervisor at least twice per month. These work zone inspections are unannounced to ensure every crew and every work zone is 100% safe and compliant at all times. Pre-trip and post-trip Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR's) are completed and reported, and all AWP crews hold tailgate safety meetings once they arrive to a job site, for every job, every day.

AWP Safety Supervisors and Trainers use tablets to conduct work zone inspections, vehicle inspections, incident investigations, and to complete other safety-related reports. The technology allows AWP’s Safety Department to instantly collect digital safety records completed by our field operations, including our daily DVIR's, which improves efficiency in responses to safety concerns. We utilize this technology for more detailed inspections, immediate reporting, and more complete safety data.

The AWP team supports a collective goal by agreeing to think, practice and support job safety every day in everything that we do. Our safety model is, “Every team member will look out for the wellbeing of each other.” Through our Safety Bonus Program, AWP teams are rewarded at both individual, and facility levels for accident and injury-free operations throughout the year. AWP leadership develops and maintains an aggressive safety program, and our team assumes personal responsibility for creating a safe workplace, and providing safe, compliant, professional services.
